Sting Attends New ‘Dune’ Premiere 40 Years After Starring in the Original
Sting had a very nostalgic evening at the recent New York City premiere of Dune: Part Two. He attended the movie premiere with his daughter, Mickey Sumner, and reminisced about appearing in the original Dune film, the same year that his daughter was born. Sumner is an actor as well and is known for the films Frances Ha and Snowpiercer. They both celebrated the film by wearing futuristic all-black outfits.
Sting starred in the 1984 film version of Dune, an American science fiction franchise that started with the novel by Frank Herbert in 1965. The book is considered the best-selling science fiction novel in history and spawned several films, including the recent 2021 adaptation and the new 2024 sequel. Sting portrayed Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the original movie and the character will be played by Elvis star Austin Butler in Dune: Part Two.
The novel and films are set thousands of years in the future and follow a civilization that has banned all computers and other technology. Dune is a dangerous place that holds a drug called Spice, which gives people some interesting powers. Writer and director David Lynch reportedly considers the 1984 film the only failure of his entire career and still refuses to talk about it in detail. One of the creepiest facts about 1984’s Dune is that the suits worn by the Guild members were actually body bags from the 1920s! The cast was not given this information until filming was over.
Sting starred alongside Sir Patrick Stewart in the film and apparently, Stewart didn’t know who Sting was at the time! When they met, Sting told him that he was in a band called The Police, and for a while, Stewart thought that he was a police officer in a local band. Have you seen the original Dune and the reboots? Which one is your favorite adaptation?
Dune: Part Two comes out in theaters for everyone on Friday, March 1, 2024.
