Cameron Crowe’s Epic Love Story ‘Say Anything’ Turns 35; Where Is the Cast Now?
Need to win back the love of your life? Easy! Just drive over to their house at dawn, hold a boombox over your head and blast Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Cameron Crowe’s 1989 directorial debut remains the quintessential post-high-school summer romance film and made stars of its two main players, raising John Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler (and his overcoat) to slacker Hall of Fame status. As Say Anything turns 35 this year, let’s see what the cast has been up to.
John Cusack (57)

After his career-making role in Say Anything, John Cusack became one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. He would star in many beloved films of the 1990s (Grosse Pointe Blank, Being John Malkovich, Bullets Over Broadway), 2000s (High Fidelity, Must Love Dogs) and 2010s (Hot Tub Time Machine, Love & Mercy). Cusack most recently appeared in the Prime Video series Utopia and the direct-to-VOD film Pursuit. Lately, he has been in the news for his radical political views and accused of antisemitism, which he heatedly denies. He occasionally attends fan cons and according to IMDB has a film titled Fog of War in post-production.
Ione Skye (53)

Her turn as valedictorian Diane Court netted Ione Skye roles in River’s Edge, Wayne’s World, One Night Stand, Fever Pitch and Zodiac. These days, Skye — daughter of 1960s singer Donovan — is a painter and children’s author, and has had recurring roles on Good Girls and La Brea. Currently, she lives in Australia with her husband, musician Ben Lee. The couple host a podcast called Weirder Together and she is writing a memoir.
Lili Taylor (57)

Playing the heartbroken musician friend of Cusack, this was Taylor’s second major movie role after Mystic Pizza. In the ’90s, she became an indie movie darling, starring in films like I Shot Andy Warhol, Four Rooms and High Fidelity. She also landed a recurring role on Six Feet Under and has been busy acting in many other films, TV, and theater. Today the avid bird lover has a role in the Apple+ series Manhunt. She is married to Nick Flynn and they have one daughter.

The British-born actor turned American citizen got a late start in acting at the age of 37. He had a couple of notable roles in Moonstruck and The Manhattan Project before he played the overprotective father of Diane Court. What he is probably most known for is his role as Martin Crane on Fraiser. After Fraiser ended, he mostly concentrated on theater roles until his death in 2018.
Other notables who got an early start in their careers were Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill, Californication, Better Things), Chynna Phillips (of Wilson Phillips), plus the stars of fellow 1989 release Heathers, Kim Walker and Lisanne Falk. Last but not least Cusack’s sister Joan has had bit roles in 10 of his movies, these days mostly doing voice work but did have a reoccurring role in Shameless.
