Inside the Strange Marriage of Michael Jackson & Lisa Marie Presley in the ’90s
In Hollywood, sometimes there are just couples that you expect… their love story blossoms with ease and fans fall in love with their love. Then, there are some couples that make you go, “Huh?” When Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley‘s only daughter Lisa Marie Presley wed, they shocked the world and many felt like the whirlwind romance just wouldn’t last (spoiler: it didn’t). Now that we have sadly lost both of these iconic stars, let’s dive into their relationship and brief marriage in honor of their wedding on May 26, 1994.
Michael and Lisa Marie reportedly met in the ’70s but their relationship did not bud until the 1990s. At first, they were just friends as Lisa Marie was married to Danny Keough and had two children with him, Riley and Benjamin. Michael turned to Lisa Marie for support when he was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler. He denied the accusations and she was by his side, eventually she left Keough and then married Michael just 20 days after finalizing her divorce. He reportedly proposed on a whim on the phone and she accepted.
They eloped to La Vega in the Dominican Republic, both wearing all black. Michael was upset because his mother couldn’t be there because they had to keep the wedding low key to stay away from the press. In a statement, she shared with the media and their bewildered fans, “My married name is Mrs. Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson. My marriage to Michael Jackson took place in a private ceremony outside the United States weeks ago. I am very much in love with Michael. I dedicate my life to being his wife. I understand and support him. We both look forward to raising a family.” Unfortunately, things weren’t so perfect at home with Michael struggling with painkiller addiction, which no doubt brought up memories of Lisa Marie’s late father.
They separated just about a year later in December 1995 and their divorce was finalized in August 1996. Do you remember their marriage? What were your thoughts on it at the time?
