‘Saturday Night Live’ 50th Anniversary Special: Everything We Know So Far
Not many television shows can brag about celebrating a 50th anniversary. Saturday Night Live is gearing up to celebrate this momentous occasion with a three-hour primetime special next year. The sketch comedy show created by Lorne Michaels, who remains the head honcho today, began in 1975.
The special will air on Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 8-11pm ET on NBC and will then stream on its streaming service Peacock. There has also been a lot of speculation about Michaels’ potential retirement, but he has confirmed that he will remain with the show for the anniversary special. After that, it is unknown what his future plans are. There have been rumors about SNL alum Tina Fey taking over his job.
“It could easily be Tina Fey,” Michaels admitted. “But, you know, there are a lot of people who are there now who also [could be good]. Tina’s brilliant and great at everything. She’s a very important person in my life.” As of now, NBC has been very secretive about his potential retirement and the special. However, fans can likely expect cameos from SNL alums over the years and perhaps even nods to iconic sketches during the three-hour extravaganza. Though the show’s ratings have fallen in recent years, it still remains popular, as it features big Hollywood stars and musicians.
The 40th anniversary special from 2015 featured music performances from legendary musicians such as Paul McCartney, current and past SNL cast members, and tons of celeb cameos, so we can only expect big things for the 50th anniversary special. I’m hoping my favorite SNL alum Will Ferrell will make an appearance with a cowbell. Who are you hoping to see during the special?
Stay tuned for more information as it comes out!
