The Trailer for ‘80s-set Thriller ‘MaXXXine’ Starring Mia Goth Offers a Slice of Kevin Bacon
A24 just released the new trailer for MaXXXine, and boy is it oozing with ‘80s style: the blood-soaked VHS tapes, the music from Animotion and Laura Brannigan, the neon-drenched streets of Reagan-era Los Angeles—you’re totally transported back to 1985. Of course, what else did you expect from Ti West (The House of the Devil), a director known for making hyper-styled films with vintage flare?
MaXXXine is actually the final film in his X trilogy, which all starred rising scream queen Mia Goth. Here, the director and actress team up once again to conclude the story of Maxine Minx.
X, the first of this trilogy, is a straight-up slasher flick about a group of young filmmakers shooting an adult film in rural Texas in the late 70s. In it, Goth played a young Maxine Minx and an elderly maniac named Pearl. In Pearl (which was a prequel set in 1918), Goth went on to portray a young version of that titular character and explore the origins of her murderous ways. Now things flash forward to the 1980s and we pick up with Maxine’s story.
Per A24’s official press release, the premise reads: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”
The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, with Giancarlo Esposito, and, last but not least, the great Kevin Bacon. Not familiar with X? Well, you’re in luck and actually have a chance to see it on the big screen again (and we recommend that you do). The glorious horror flick is slashing its way back to theaters for a one-night-only nationwide fan event on June 18. Pearl is currently streaming on Prime and Paramount+.
MaXXXine slices and dices its way into theaters everywhere on July 5
