Alan Cumming is having his moment as the host of the wildly popular competition reality series The Traitors. Prior to hosting the show, Cumming was best known for movies such as GoldenEye, X2: X-Men United, Emma, Nicholas Nickleby and many more. One of his first film roles was playing Sandy Frink in the 1997 movie Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, starring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.

In 2022, Kudrow and Sorvino showed up together at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, sparking rumors of a sequel to the beloved ’90s film. A few months later, the stars confirmed that something is in the works with the original screenwriter Robin Schiff. Cumming has said that he would love to appear in a sequel and spoke of the misogyny of Hollywood that has likely kept the film from happening sooner.

He said, “I would love to do a sequel. I have to say, I think the fact that there hasn’t been is a really big example of the misogyny of Hollywood. You know, I think that the things I’ve heard about why, sort of like, ‘Oh, you know, they’re getting on a bit, older women, blah blah blah.’ Terrible…. It’s such a popular film. If it was two men in that — you know, two men, successful film — we would’ve had six by now.”

He added about starring in the original film, “I don’t know why they asked me. It was the first film I ever made in Hollywood, and it was one of the first things I ever read when I came here to sort of whore myself around. It was just so clever and witty. It’s one of these films that some people are obsessed with.”

Cumming said that he knows what the story is and thinks the sequel plot is “really good” and continued “I think what’s great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters.” Are you excited about a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion?
