Al Schultz, a legendary makeup artist for CBS who worked on shows such as The Carol Burnett Show, All in the Family and Good Times has died at the age of 82. His publicist confirmed that he died at his Long Beach, California home but did not share the cause of death. Schultz was also known for being married to actress and comedian Vicki Lawrence. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

Schultz grew up in Wisconsin but moved to Los Angeles to work in Hollywood. He began his career as a camera dolly operator and grip before becoming a makeup artist. He studied under legendary makeup artist Harry Maret and worked in the makeup department for almost 10 years on The Carol Burnett Show. He met Lawrence there and not long after, they wed in 1974 and had two children together. Over the years, when Lawrence has been asked for her favorite beauty tip, she always joked, “Sleep with your make-up man!”

He was only 30 years old when he became the youngest person to be promoted to Head of West Coast CBS Makeup in 1972. He went on to work on shows such as Maude, The Jeffersons, The Sonny and Cher Show, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, Hollywood Squares, The Dean Martin Show and many, many more. He worked with iconic stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Doris Day. He later worked on the television series The Planet of the Apes. However, the schedule was so grueling that he ended up retiring early to focus on Lawrence’s career and their children.
