Svengoolie is back with another list of curated horror flicks for July! In addition, he is celebrating a very special anniversary. It has been 45 years since Rich Koz took over as the character Svengoolie (also known as Son of Svengoolie to pay tribute to the original Sven, Jerry G. Bishop). The staff of Weigel Broadcasting, home of MeTV, MeTV Toons, and several other channels honored Koz with a fun celebration. Not only that but MeTV will continue to celebrate the anniversary in 2024, especially come spooky season with October’s annual “Svengoolie’s Halloween BOO-nanza.”

Alongside his movie picks for July, Koz opened up about some of his earliest memories playing Svengoolie. One of his first appearances was in July 1979 for a charity “Christmas in July” event with a bit he learned from Bishop called “The Trees” with audience participation, comparing women to trees. He didn’t share much in case he wants to bring back the bit in an upcoming show. Since then, he has made countless appearances including some upcoming events in August at the Flashback Weekend horror convention in Rosemont, IL.

Now, let’s get into the July movie picks! Starting on July 6, fans of nostalgic sci-fi movies will love the first pick. Svengoolie will play The Angry Red Planet, a 1959 movie about a team of astronauts who travel to Mars to find some frightening creatures. On July 13th, he will play Munster Go Home! and said that viewers request the film again and again. The 1966 film follows the beloved family The Munsters as they inherit a manor in England only to find out that the locals don’t want them to live there.

Airing on July 20th is another highly requested film, the original Universal movie Dracula. With all of the hype of the new Universal theme park coming with a Universal Monsters land, it is no wonder that people want to revisit the 1931 classic starring Bela Lugosi. Ending the month on July 27th is 1959’s Killer Shrews starring James Best. In the film, he must fight off giant mutant shrews. Watch Svengoolie’s picks every Saturday at 8 pm ET on MeTV. Which film are you looking forward to watching the most this month?
