With the 2024 Summer Olympics underway, many of us are glued to our TVs and loving every minute of it. Why are we so addicted? Two reasons: World-class athletes, and the enthralling stories behind their respective journeys to the world’s ultimate showcase.

When you consider those factors, there’s likely never been an Olympic athlete more memorable than gymnast extraordinaire (and five-time Gold Medalist) Nadia Comăneci.

After setting the Olympic world ablaze during the 1976 and 1980 Games, Comăneci remained active and influential in and out of the gymnastics community for years to come… but where is she today?

Nadia was born in a small mountain town in Romania in 1961. A naturally energetic child, she was placed in gymnastics classes while in kindergarten and competed at high levels internationally throughout her teen years. Some of her earliest highlights included a United States debut and victory in 1976’s American Cup, held in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. She also made headlines while competing in a little event known as the Olympics, scoring the first perfect 10 scores in the history of their gymnastics competitions.

Amazingly, Comăneci’s fame and notoriety grew even more with her return to Olympic competition in Moscow in 1980, even in the shadow of  the United States and several other countries boycotting the event that year. Despite the heightened media attention and tense international climate, Nadia managed to rise to the occasion, earning two more gold medals.

Over the next several years, Comăneci’s life was a whirlwind. Under strict surveillance from the Romanian Government, she followed up her 1980 Olympic victory with a U.S.-spanning “Nadia ’91” tour. Largely restricted from leaving her home country for the next several years, she officially retired in 1984 and maintained a quiet, bleak existence until she finally defected in 1989 to begin a new chapter of her life in the United States.

A Whole New World

Comăneci moved to Oklahoma in 1991 to work alongside her old friend and fellow gold medal gymnast Bart Conner at his gymnastics school. Five years later, Romania would welcome the pair back with open arms for their nationally televised wedding.

Since 1994, the Nadia Comăneci International Invitational was established to provide an elite showcase for international gymnastic excellence, all while she and her husband continue to run the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy, the Perfect 10 Production Company and International Gymnast Magazine.

Even after all of her struggles with her own government, Comăneci has maintained a powerful connection to her home of Romania, proudly serving as honorary president of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

In addition to years being embraced by United States pop culture (she appeared as a contestant on on Celebrity Apprentice, for Pete’s sake), Comăneci (now 62) is also still synonymous with the Olympic Games, appearing front and center through the years as torch bearer, broadcast analyst, and star of many Olympic-themed TV commercials. With her place in sports history etched in stone, one of the greatest gymnasts of all time continues to set a standard for the level of performance, talent and bravery that we can all work towards.
