Summer is heating up but Svengoolie wants to cool you down this August with some chilling horror flicks. This month, he aimed to showcase some horror classics that haven’t been shown on the MeTV Svengoolie schedule in a while, including a few with special effects and odd plots. First up is Cult of the Cobra on August 3. In the 1955 film, six American officers discover a secret ritual of the Lamians, who worship women who can become serpents. The cult isn’t too happy to be found and the High Lamian Priestess puts a curse on the men.

Once back in the U.S., all of the men start having mysterious accidents when a woman, played by the beautiful Faith Domergue, is around and before each one dies, they see the shadow of a cobra. This creepy classic proves that you probably shouldn’t mess with ancient cults, especially if snakes are involved. Coming up next on August 10, horror movie icon Vincent Price stars in The Mad Magician as Gallico the Great. Eva Gabor also appears in the 1954 film about a skilled magician who is about to share one of his greatest illusions of all time when his business partner screws things up for him. Fans of the film may remember that it was once offered in 3D too.

On August 17, Svengoolie presents It Came from Beneath the Sea, a stop-action animation by Ray Harryhausen from 1955. In the film, a nuclear submarine comes across a giant radioactive octopus who eventually wreaks havoc on San Francisco. On August 24, the 1940 Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi film Black Friday follows a doctor who tries to save his friend by doing a brain transplant. Turns out, the brain was from a criminal and the mild-mannered professor starts acting out with help from his new brain.

Finally, on August 31, Svengoolie is airing War of the Colossal Beast from 1958, written, produced, and directed by Bert I. Gordon. The black-and-white film is a follow-up to The Amazing Colossal Man. The man-turned-gigantic monster is found south of the border and starts going on a rampage in Hollywood. No matter what type of horror movie is your favorite, Svengoolie has some great picks this month. Sven is continuing to celebrate his 45th anniversary, so for up-to-date news and more you can sign up for his monthly newsletter here. Which movie are you looking forward to the most?
