Faye Dunaway Is Glad to Have Revealed Her Deepest Struggles in New Doc
For decades, there have been rumors that Faye Dunaway was “difficult to work with.” With her new documentary, the story behind these rumors comes to light and shares a more complicated side of the iconic actress. Dunaway revealed that she has struggled with a bipolar disorder diagnosis as well as alcoholism during her long career. Despite it being tough to share this sensitive information, the 83-year-old said that she now feels that a weight has been lifted off her shoulders.
She admitted that sharing more about her life and experiences in the HBO documentary, simply titled Faye, was “cathartic.” She explained, “To look at it all and see what it added up to. It was difficult sometimes, because it is very private to me. I was a bit wary at seeing it all out there, but that’s the process — it’s the whole point of the film, the sharing of who I am. I dug deep!”
“The mania we tap into, and the sadness, of course … I don’t know how all that works exactly, but I understand that I need all of that to use in my craft,” she continued. “It has been a difficulty, of course, as a person sometimes. It’s something I’ve had to deal with and overcome and understand. It is something that is part of who I am, and that now I can understand and deal with much more.”

Her son Liam O’Neill convinced her to tell her side of the story in terms of her career and her reputation. She felt that unless she shared everything, it wasn’t the true encompassing story. The documentary made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and is now available to watch on HBO and Max.
