In a recent interview, Christina Applegate opened up about the moon necklace she was wearing and revealed that she never takes it off. She was given the necklace by music icon Stevie Nicks, who reportedly gives out moon necklaces to her famous friends, and Applegate was the latest woman to receive a new version of the half-moon jewelry Nicks has worn for many decades.

Applegate shared, “This was given to me by a legend, that she gives out to sisters of the moon, which is kind of part of her tribe of people that she loves,” adding that Nicks wants the women to treat the necklaces as “lucky charms and to pass them along to another in need, should the moment arise.” Some other lucky recipients are Taylor Swift, Chrissie Hynde, the Haim sisters, Vanessa Carlton, Tavi Gevinson, and even Make-a-Wish children and injured soldiers. Applegate said that she met Nicks while filming the sitcom Up All Night and later Nicks recorded at Applegate’s recording studio in her home, where they became fast friends.

When did Stevie Nicks begin giving away moon necklaces?

It all began in 1977, when she started giving them away to her friends whom she calls “Sisters of the Moon.” Those who have received the highly coveted jewelry say that people are often drawn to it and they get asked about it a lot. Musician Alana Haim said, “That moon necklace holds a lot of power. Ever since I put it on, every person I’ve met has been like, ‘Where’d you get that necklace?’ People are drawn to the moon. I can’t express it.”

Nicks added about the recipients, “They deserve to have a moon. They deserve to have that inspiration and that little tip of my top hat to them to say I believe in you and I think that you’re amazing. So I’m telling you right now, you can have it all if you want it.”
