TCM Donald Sutherland Memorial Tribute

MASH, Donald Sutherland, 1970,

Tonight, Turner Classic Movies remembers late, great actor Donald Sutherland, who passed away in Miami June 20 at age 88 (he was born July 17, 1935, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada) with four of his memorable films this evening. While Sutherland himself was somehow never even nominated for an Academy Award, the actor was a big part of many lauded films and certainly contributed a great deal to their successes, as you can see with this evening’s titles. The lineup begins with Best Director Oscar nominee Robert Altman’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated, darkly satiric 1970 Korean War-set film M*A*S*H. As Hawkeye Pierce, Sutherland leads an outstanding ensemble cast including Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, Robert Duvall and Best Supporting Actress nominee Sally Kellerman. Next is the Best Picture-winning 1980 drama Ordinary People, from Best Director winner Robert Redford. In this emotionally wrenching film, Sutherland stars alongside Best Actress nominee Mary Tyler Moore, Best Supporting Actor winner Timothy Hutton and Supporting Actor nominee Judd Hirsch. Moving more into late night, the lineup features Klute (1971), the classic psychological thriller that pairs Sutherland with Best Actress winner Jane Fonda, before concluding early tomorrow with Kelly’s Heroes (1970), a World War II comedic heist film with a terrific cast that also includes Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Carroll O’Connor.
