Hungarian American actor Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó — better known as horror icon Bela Lugosi — is fittingly celebrated as Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month during the spooky season in October 2024. The first four Wednesdays of the month will feature nighttime lineups of Lugosi favorites divided by themes.
October 2
The first night’s theme “Universal Horror Star,” kicks off with his legendary title role in the film that made him a star: 1931’s Dracula. Following that are other frightening Universal classics with Lugosi in lead or supporting roles, including The Black Cat (1934), the first of eight big-screen pairings between the actor and fellow scary movie master Boris Karloff, and The Wolf Man (1941).
October 9
Films in this lineup show how adept Lugosi was at making people laugh as well as scaring them, sometimes parodying his onscreen persona and creepy reputation. This evening of horror comedies begins with the most memorable example of that: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), which saw Lugosi back onscreen as Dracula for the first time since 1931.
October 16
Offering a variety of Lugosi titles, including one from his pre-fame era, the 1929 mystery film The Thirteenth Chair, helmed by Dracula director Tod Browning, and his final film, director Ed Wood’s infamous, very low-budget production Plan 9 From Outer Space (1957), White Zombie (1932) and Mark of the Vampire (1935).
October 23
Brings movies featuring the star in supporting roles, and sometimes in perhaps unexpected genres, like the comedies Broadminded (1931) and Ninotchka (1939), both airing late-night.
