Stevie Nicks just released her first new song in four years and hopes that it can be more than just a catchy tune — she wrote it as a beacon of hope for many struggling out there.

Nicks began writing “The Lighthouse” back in 2022, after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She wrote it with Magnus Birgersson and Vincent Villuis and coproduced with Dave Cobb and Sheryl Crow, who provided backing vocals, bass and electric guitar for the song.

The song took over two years to complete because Nicks admitted that, though she wrote the song and recorded it in one night, it took a while to make it to fans because she has been on the road on tour. She shared about her inspiration, “It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘What can we, as a collective force, do about this.’ For me, it was to write a song.”

Not only has Nicks released the song, she’s also put out a music video. It starts out with definitions of a lighthouse, and transitions to Nicks singing and imagery of women’s rights protests over the years. The art for the single is a hand-drawn lighthouse with a purple fog surrounding the light.

Nicks added about the song, “I have often said to myself, ‘This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters, and the men that love them.” Nicks is set to perform the song on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 12, 2024, during the show’s 50th anniversary season.
