The widow of late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, Ethel Kennedy, is currently in the hospital after suffering from a stroke. The 96-year-old reportedly had the stroke in her sleep last week and is now receiving treatment, surrounded by her family. Her grandson Joe Kennedy III shared a statement about her and asked for privacy.

He wrote that she had a wonderful summer with her family and that it was a gift to all of the Kennedy family and to her as well. He added, “She was brought to an area hospital, where she is now receiving treatment. She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible, and she is surrounded by family. She is, as you may know, a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life. We are here looking after her.” Joe also asked his followers to “keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”

This past April, Ethel celebrated her 96th birthday. Joe shared several photos of the celebration at the time and praised his grandmother. Ethel and Robert were married in 1950 and stayed together until he was assassinated in 1968. They had 11 children together, including their youngest, Rory. Ethel was pregnant with Rory at the time of the assassination.

Ethel is currently the oldest living member of the Kennedy Family. After her husband’s death, she founded the nonprofit charity the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights to continue to pursue the goals of peace that her husband started. Later in life, she focused her time on many social causes, including the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Project. In 2012, her daughter Rory directed a documentary about her mother’s life, titled Ethel, about her political involvements, life with her husband and raising 11 children on her own after his death.
