Jennifer Grey Still Hoping for ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel
Jennifer Grey is still hopeful about a Dirty Dancing sequel despite several delays. The sequel to the popular 1987 film was announced four years ago and has been pushed back several times now, more recently due to last year’s Hollywood strikes. Grey finally shared an update on the film at the BFI London Film Festival premiere of her latest film, A Real Pain.
She said, “I can’t tell you much about Dirty Dancing as I’m not going to make promises. I’m just waiting for them to really nail it down as it has to be right.” Grey is set to reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman and will also serve as an executive producer.
Unfortunately, Grey’s original costar Patrick Swayze will not be in the film as he passed away in 2009 after a pancreatic cancer battle. Even so, the sequel will likely pay tribute to the star who helped make it one of the most successful movies of the ’80s. Reportedly there were talks with Swayze’s estate to make his presence known in the new film somehow.
Filmmaker Jonathan Levine is set to direct the movie and shared, “While the original Dirty Dancing has always been one of my favorite films, I never imagined I would direct the sequel. Through cowriting it, I fell in love with the characters (new and old), the world of 1990s Catskills New York and the music, which will range from songs from the original movie to ’90s hip-hop.”
He continued, “I can’t wait to collaborate with Jennifer to bring this beautiful story of summer and romance and dancing to a generation of new fans. And to the longtime ones, I promise we will not ruin your childhood. We will tackle the assignment with sophistication, ambition and, above all, love.”
Stay tuned for more announcements as they are shared!
