The very first Godzilla movie, Gojira, was released in Japan on Nov. 3, 1954.

On Nov. 1, 2024 — just ahead of this year’s 70th anniversary celebration of what has become known as Godzilla Day, on Nov. 3, 2024 — the most recent movie starring the King of the Monsters, 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, is coming back to theaters.

Toho, the studio behind the Godzilla films, sent out this cool poster for the Godzilla Minus One — Godzilla 70th Anniversary Re-Release:

The scales along his back and tail are lit up with radioactivity. A logo above him says "Celebrate 70 Years of Godzilla." Below the image is the title and credits for the film, and the release date of November 1.

Both the original color version of Godzilla Minus One, and its remastered black-and-white rendition, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, are being re-released. Each screening will also showcase over 13 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes content.

While I wish Toho was re-releasing the original Gojira to theaters as well, Godzilla Minus One is definitely worth seeing on the big screen again (or for the first time, if you missed the first go-round) and a nice way to celebrate the G-man’s big seven-oh.

In either version, Godzilla Minus One is a fantastic production that manages to provide both old-school Godzilla thrills and a new direction for the seven-decade-old franchise. It is set in postwar Japan, where Godzilla brings new devastation to an already scorched landscape. With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back against an unrelenting horror.

Writer/director/special effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki and his team earned Academy Awards for Godzilla Minus One‘s effects — the first Oscar awarded to Godzilla after 70 years in the business!

Speaking of Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, Toho also recently put out this nice compilation video celebrating the kaiju king:

Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will be re-released in theaters beginning Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. Visit tickets.godzilla.com, or Fandango or another ticket retailer, or your local theater’s site for showtimes and tickets in your area.
