Stevie Nicks opened up about her life, career and tumultuous personal relationships in a new Rolling Stone interview — and had some choice words about her ex and former Fleetwood Mac bandmate, Lindsey Buckingham.

Nicks and Buckingham’s relationship is the stuff of rock ‘n’ roll legend — the pair joined Fleetwood Mac as a couple, and their breakup is documented on the band’s blockbuster 1977 album Rumours. In fact, two songs about their breakup, “Dreams” (written by Nicks) and “Go Your Own Way” (written by Buckingham), hit the Billboard Top 10.

Working with your ex is never easy, though, even if it leads to selling millions of albums. The pair continued to clash in the band for decades, and eventually Buckingham was fired from the band, in 2018. When asked if she thought he should have been fired sooner, Nicks replied, “No, I think that all just happened the way it should have. It happened one night, not planned, at a MusiCares. I didn’t even tell anybody it had happened in my head until the whole ceremony was over.” She added that “he wasn’t very nice to anybody,” and that her parents encouraged her to get away from Buckingham.

Following the firing, the duo didn’t see each other until the celebration of life for their bandmate Christine McVie in 2022. Nicks talked about seeing Buckingham there and said, “The only time I’ve spoken to Lindsey was there, for about three minutes. I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.”

However, the 76-year-old didn’t only have jabs for her ex. While she said that Fleetwood Mac would never reunite because of McVie’s death, she does wish Buckingham the best. She continued, “I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people. He’s also an icon, and he can teach people. He’s not stopped in his tracks. He can still make music and have fun.”
