Teri Garr’s Peers Share Heartwarming Tributes to Her
Teri Garr, best known for movies such as Young Frankenstein and Tootsie, passed away at the age of 79. While she had been retired from acting since 2011 after suffering from several health issues including a brain aneurysm and multiple sclerosis, she had a long list of accomplishments.
She started her career as a trained dancer who performed in six Elvis Presley musicals and went on to become a comedy great in the ’70s. ’90s kids may know her as Phoebe’s (Lisa Kudrow) mother on Friends. As the news broke of her passing, many of her former costars shared their condolences as well as memories from working with Garr over the years.
Michael Keaton, in the news a lot recently due to his reprisal of Beetlejuice in the sequel, recalled the time they worked together on the film Mr. Mom.

Lisa Kudrow talked about her TV mom in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. She wrote, “Teri Garr was a comedic acting genius who was and is a huge influence on me and I know I’m not alone in that. I feel so lucky and grateful I got to work with Teri Garr.”
Mel Brooks mentioned how great it was to work with Garr in Young Frankenstein and noted how funny her German accent was.
So very sorry to hear about Teri Garr’s passing. She was so talented and so funny. Her humor and lively spirit made the YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN set a pleasure to work on. Her “German” accent had us all in stitches! She will be greatly missed.
