Veterans Day Movie Marathons Airing on TCM & MOVIES!
In commemoration of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 8, classic movie networks MOVIES! and TCM are each airing military/war-themed films throughout the day.
MOVIES! is featuring the following titles:
Beginning at 6am
Director John Ford’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Long Voyage Home (1940), a World War II-set drama starring John Wayne, Thomas Mitchell and Ward Bond; Von Ryan’s Express (1965), a World War II adventure film with Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard; Best Director nominee Robert Altman’s Best Picture-nominated dark satire M*A*S*H (1970), set during the Korean War and featuring a great ensemble led by Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, Best Supporting Actress nominee Sally Kellerman and Robert Duvall; the Best Picture-winning Patton (1970), headlined by Best Actor winner George C. Scott as the titular World War II military leader alongside Karl Malden; Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), an epic American/Japanese coproduction about the Pearl Harbor attack starring Martin Balsam, Jason Robards and Joseph Cotten, among many other actors from both countries; The Longest Day (1962), an epic, Best Picture-nominated dramatization of the World War II invasion of Normandy, with an all-star international cast featuring Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Ryan and more; and A Farewell to Arms (1957), based on Ernest Hemingway’s World War I novel and headlined by Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones.
TCM airs several titles starting in the morning and continuing into early evening

The Scarlet Coat (1955), set during the American Revolution and featuring Cornel Wilde as Maj. John Boulton and Robert Douglas as Benedict Arnold; cowriter/director John Huston’s The Red Badge of Courage (1951), based on Stephen Crane’s Civil War novel; Best Director nominee Howard Hawks’ Best Picture-nominated biographical drama Sergeant York (1941), led by Best Actor winner Gary Cooper as World War I hero Alvin C. York; Air Force (1943), another Hawks-directed film, this one set during World War II and led by John Garfield; Hell to Eternity (1960), based on the true World War II experiences of Marine hero Guy Gabaldon (Jeffrey Hunter); Men of the Fighting Lady (1954), a Korean War-set drama starring Van Johnson; Purple Hearts (1984), led by Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd as a Navy surgeon and nurse who fall in love while serving in the Vietnam War; and Private Benjamin (1980), the popular comedy starring Best Actress nominee Goldie Hawn and Best Supporting Actress nominee Eileen Brennan. Then, late-night this evening/early tomorrow morning, Best Actor winner Fredric March, Best Supporting Actor winner Harold Russell and Dana Andrews lead Best Director winner William Wyler’s Best Picture-winning 1946 drama The Best Years of Our Lives, which follows men readjusting to life back on the home front following World War II.
