Barbie, Wii Sports & The Last of Us Enters Video Game Hall of Fame
You’ve likely heard of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but what about the World Video Game Hall of Fame? The World Video Game Hall of Fame was created in 2015 and can be visited at The Strong Museum in Rochester, NY. Each year, the museum inducts several video games that have had a huge impact on our culture and many of them are just plain fun! This year the inductees are Wii Sports (2006), Barbie Fashion Designer (1996), Computer Space (1971), and The Last of Us (2013).
With all of the hype surrounding the upcoming Barbie film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it is no wonder that a Barbie video game is heading to the museum. In addition, The Last of Us became a huge hit show this year based on the zombie apocalypse video game. As many video games have been turned into movies and television shows (hello Mario Bros.!), several critics have called The Last of Us the best adaptation of a video game ever made.
When the World Video Game Hall of Fame was launched several years ago, the inaugural class included several games that have been extremely popular in pop culture: Pong (1972), Pac-Man (1980), Tetris (1984), Super Mario Bros. (1985), Doom (1993), and World of Warcraft (2004). Other games that have been inducted include Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Space Invaders (1978), Grand Theft Auto III (2001), The Oregon Trail (1971), The Sims (2000), Animal Crossing (2001), Donkey Kong (1981), Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), Pokémon Red and Green (1996), and more.
So, how does the museum actually select video games to be inducted from the plethora of games being played? The museum says that anyone can nominate a video game but the final selections are made based on a team of journalists and scholars who know all about the history of video games and their role in society. The public can vote on the nominees and the public as a whole acts as one member of the voting committee. The Strong Museum has a permanent display of all of the honorees.
