Jim Carrey Came Out of Retirement Because He Needed Money
Comedy legend Jim Carrey opened up about retiring from acting two years ago. Now, he’s already working again because he “needs the money.”
In 2022, while promoting the film Sonic 2, in which he plays the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik, he admitted, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
He continued, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Just two years later, he is reprising his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which debuts in theaters on Dec. 20. He joked about coming back so soon after retirement: “I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
Carrey, best known for films such as Bruce Almighty, The Mask, Ace Ventura and many, many more, also has another film in pre-production. According to his IMDb, he will star in the film Evergreen Pines and the Fading Summer. The plot summary reads: “A middle-aged man finds himself at a strange sleep-away camp, competing against eccentric campers. He searches for his missing friend and a mythical grey beast guarding a hidden treasure.”
He also revealed that he would reprise another one of his most iconic roles, but with a caveat. He would love to play the Grinch again, but said parts of the role were awful. “Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” Carrey explained. The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process.” What got Carrey through the whole process was reminding himself it was all for the kids.
So, what do you think of Carrey’s return? Did you even know he retired?
