Where Is Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam Now? 40th Anniversary Tour Planned
Lisa Lisa (aka Lisa Velez ) is preparing for a major year with her 40th anniversary tour, a new Lifetime biopic, a memoir and more.
The popular Latina singer/songwriter, who rose to fame with Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam (along with band members Alex Moseley and Mike Hughes) in the 1980s with hits like “Lost in Emotion” and “Can You Feel the Beat,” is the subject of a new Lifetime original biopic, and is kicking off her 40th anniversary “Take You Home Tour.” She also has plans for a memoir later this year.
“March 1 is the kickoff of our 40th anniversary tour,” she tells ReMIND. “We have a slew of friends of mine — performers, artists — who are going to be on the show with us. We’ll be changing up different artists, every city that we hit.”

While she’s long since split from Cult Jam (“they created their own group and they’re out performing,” she explains, “and I wish them nothing but the best”), and now goes by just Lisa Lisa, she’s remained with her “ride or die” former band member, manager and best friend Toni Menage.
“When I first hired her she was a kid; well, so was I,” she laughs. “But just to see her and her talent and her heart on that stage and everything that she did for me — she’s family. She’s like a soulmate, and everything she’s ever said to me was always truth. She helped me through a lot. She got me out of a lot of crap that I was going through, and she opened my eyes to it. To me, that’s loyalty. That’s friendship and that’s business.”
They’ve got big plans for the tour, too.
“I like to keep it huge. I like to keep the audience entertained,” Lisa Lisa says. “I want to make you feel like you’re back on that stage, back in the ’80s with me — dancing, performing, living my life with me.”
Before the kickoff of the 40th anniversary tour, however, her life story will be shared in the new Lifetime biopic Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story (premiering Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8pmET/PT).
