Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a Classic Donny & Marie Special (Video)

DONNY AND MARIE OSMOND, celebrate Valentine's Day on the
Everett Collection

Love was in the air on Feb. 12, 1979 — or at least, it was on TV, with the Osmonds Valentine’s Day Special starring Donny and Marie Osmond. The special, which appeared right after their original variety show Donny & Marie wrapped up, features appearances by non-Bee Gee brother Andy Gibb, as well as performances by comedians Paul Lynde and Ruth Buzzi, plus the Osmond’s own siblings. The episode was a spectacle from start to finish — and luckily, we have the best clips for your V-Day enjoyment.

The opening

The show opened with a hot song and dance number, including many dancers, as well as Ruth flying through the air, and both Andy and Paul trying not to fall down the cascading stairs as they sang about love.

Later in the show, Marie got a Valentine from Andy Gibb, who went on to sing his hit, “Our Love-Don’t Throw It All Away” and then dueted with Marie.

And how could one forget about Andy Gibb and the kissing booth?

Did Donny eat chocolate covered bugs on V-Day?

This episode wasn’t the first time the Osmonds teamed up for a Valentine’s Day to remember. On the Feb. 11, 1977 episode of Donny & Marie, Donny surprised Marie with a box of chocolates and tried to convince her to eat some of the fancy French “candies.” After Donny ate a few to persuade her, she, in return, teased that she took French in high school and that he had snacked on chocolate-covered grasshoppers and ants.

Be their baby?

In another Valentine’s Day-related skit, the brother-sister duo performed “Be My Baby” with an energetic group of synchronized ice skaters dressed like babies.
