‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ Wins Major Award But Snubbed by Oscars

It is hard to believe a film with a near-perfect score from audiences and critics about one of the most beloved actors of all time wouldn’t be on the Oscars nominations list. Yet that is the case for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary that weaves together the true life story of Christopher Reeve in comparison to his most famous role in 1978’s Superman. Despite a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and seeing success around the world, it was not included on the shortlist for the Oscar’s Best Documentary Feature Film. Fans were surprised by the snub, but were pleased to see it recognized in another prestigious way. The documentary won the Best Documentary award at the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) this year, held on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Reeve’s kids were there to receive the award in his honor. His son, Will Reeve, chatted with his GMA colleagues about the win. “It’s been an awesome experience, something I didn’t expect,” he said. “The actual experience, was almost out-of-body, surreal. It was really nice to see this project that we’re so proud to be associated with be rewarded in such a meaningful way. It’s the last award that this thing is going to win. It wasn’t shortlisted or nominated for an Oscar.”

The film, directed by documentary filmmakers Peter Ettedgul and Ian Bonhote, showcases the life of Reeve, before and after the accident that changed his life forever. In 1995, he was in a horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed. The near-death experience caused him to look at life in a new way, and he and his family became champions for helping others with disabilities with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

The film shares some never-before-seen footage, including home movies and personal archival material. It also includes interviews with his children, his brother, his ex Gae Exton (his wife, Dana Reeve, passed away in 2006, just about two years after Reeve died) and many of his Hollywood costars and friends. The film also aimed to showcase the special friendship between Reeve and the late Robin Williams.
