Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Mr. Spock on Star Trek, passed away 10 years ago today, on Feb. 27, 2015, at the age of 83, due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. William Shatner — who portrayed Captain Kirk on the original series, as well as in multiple spinoff films — honored his former costar’s memory by posting an undated throwback photo on Instagram, showing the two men posing together in front of a microphone on the stage.

“Remembering my dear brother, Leonard, today on the 10-year anniversary of his untimely passing on Feb. 27, 2015,” Shatner wrote. “I miss him each day.”

Shatner, 93, and Nimoy worked side-by-side on Star Trek properties for over 20 years, starring together in three seasons of the original series from 1966 to 1969, one season of Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973, and six of the Star Trek feature films — in addition, Nimoy directed 1984’s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and 1986’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, while Shatner directed 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. The pair were also known to make public appearances together.

However, in 2011, a rift developed in the men’s relationship, after Shatner used footage of Nimoy in his 2011 film The Captains without Nimoy’s permission. Shatner wrote in 2016, “One of my greatest regrets is that Leonard and I were not as close as we had been during those last few years of his life,” a situation he described as “heartbreaking.”
