Rad fans unite. The super cult film that is currently not available for streaming anywhere is getting the documentary treatment. A Rad Documentary celebrates the ’80s BMX film and its impact on pop culture by catching up with the cast and revisiting how it was made, all in honor of Rad Day 2025 on March 20. Fans will be able to watch a 4k restoration of Rad, starring a very young Lori Loughlin, Bill Allen and Ray Walston, on the big screen and then watch the documentary in theaters across the United States and Canada.

“As a BMX’er, being a stunt rider in RAD was a dream come true but producing A Rad Documentary and helping tell the story behind the film has been a full circle moment,” said producer Chris Phoenix to Variety. “It’s incredible to be able to share it with the fans whose passion and dedication to the movie have made it a classic for almost 40 years.”

Did you know that it almost wasn’t called Rad? The original title of the film was going to be Balls Out, due to the crazy stunts in the film. The filming was actually delayed because of one of the biggest stunts: the Helltrack. At first, none of the riders wanted to go down it because it was so high. It was eventually cut down to a 25 foot tall version and even then, none of the stunt riders could complete an entire lap of Helltrack. The scenes were filmed one section at a time, taking a total of two weeks to film.

Another fun fact is the character Cru is loosely based off of a stunt rider named Eddie Fiola, who did most of Allen’s stunts. Allen had to dye his hair to match Fiola’s more closely. Let us know your favorite part of the fan-favorite film!
