Dame Joan Collins Looks Stunning at 90 as She Heads Out on a One-Woman Tour
We want to wish a very Happy Birthday to the gorgeous, irreplaceable, and witty Dame Joan Collins today! She turns 90 on May 23 and is not letting her age hold her back as she is heading out on a one-woman tour later this year. She will head to several cities in the UK to promote her memoir Behind the Shoulder Pads with her husband Percy Gibson supporting her all the way. The show will give fans a chance to ask Collins questions as she shares never-before-heard stories and footage from her seven decades in show business.
One of Collins’ most memorable roles was playing Alexis Carrington in the show Dynasty. Her former co-star Emma Samms believes that she was key in proving that women can be powerful and sexy. She said, “She brought so much to the show and to women of my generation. As a woman of a certain age myself now I am extremely grateful she carved that path. Women can be seen as powerful and strong and sexy all at the same time. And I don’t think that was necessarily the case before Alexis Carrington. I think that role changed the world… and all for the better.”
Decades before she played Alexis, Collins began her career at just nine years old and was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as a teen. Her career truly began in the 1950s in British films Lady Godiva Rides Again (1951) and The Woman’s Angle (1952). In 1955, she got a contract with 20th Century Fox and appeared in The Opposite Sex (1956), Sea Wife (1957), and The Wayward Bus (1957). Collins acted steadily through each decade, gaining international superstar status when she starred in Dynasty from 1981 to 1989.
In the 2010s, Collins began acting more on television again with the series Happily Divorced (2011–2013), The Royals (2014–2018), Benidorm (2014–2017), and American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2018). Not just an actress, she was made a dame by the late Queen Elizabeth II due to her charity work. Collins is a philanthropist working for neurological research and breast cancer research and aims to help children with learning disabilities. She’s also a talented writer and has released several novels, lifestyle books, and memoirs. She has written columns for The Spectator, The Sunday Telegraph, the Daily Mail, and more.
Collins has proved time and time again that she isn’t just a pretty face, but a successful, strong, empowered woman. Not only has she accomplished everything above and more, but she also has three children and several grandchildren from her five marriages. We could all learn something from her as she has no plans to slow down in her 90s. Happy birthday, Joan!
