New Theme Park Along Route 66 Will Pay Tribute to America
Move over Florida and California, it is Oklahoma’s turn to host a brand-new theme park. American Heartland Theme Park and Resort will be located along the famous Route 66 in northeast Oklahoma. The theme park will be around 125 acres, about the same size as Disneyland in California or Florida’s Magic Kingdom. While the size is compared to Disney, over 20 former Disney Parks builders and Walt Disney Imagineers will be working on the project as well.
The theme park and resort are expected to open in 2026 but camping fans can expect an RV park with cabins (perhaps a competitor to Disney’s Fort Wilderness?) in spring 2025. Reportedly, the RV park itself will be 320 acres with 750 RV spaces and 300 cabins. The resort will be a 300-room hotel with an indoor water park. The theme park will have six different “lands” all related to different parts of America including the Great Plains, Bayou Bay, Big Timber Falls, Stony Point Harbor, Liberty Village, and Electropolis.
American Heartland CEO Larry Wilhite said in a statement, “We are thrilled to make Oklahoma the home of American Heartland Theme Park and Resort. At the crossroads of the heartland, Oklahoma is an attractive location for a family entertainment destination. We look forward to bringing unforgettable generational experiences to Oklahoma.”
The $2 billion project is also appealing to Oklahoma State Rep. Rusty Cornwell as it will undoubtedly increase tourism profits and jobs for the state. Cornwell said, “Oklahoma is excited to welcome American Heartland Theme Park and Resort. Located on historic Route 66 just west of Grand Lake, the development will attract visitors from around the world to experience and celebrate the rich cultures and hometown values America has to offer.”
While it has not been revealed exactly what kind of rides are in the works for the theme park, it will reportedly feature amusement park rides, restaurants, live shows, and more. American Heartland estimates that the theme park and resort will create around 4,000 jobs for the area and attract over $4 million guests each year.
