Documentary About Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Out Now
On December 3, 1968, Elvis Presley performed some of his greatest hits in what was called his comeback special. After several years of working on movies and being in the Army, Elvis performed an incredible show that is now considered one of his best and essentially saved his career. For fans that saw this concert in person, it was even more special, now knowing that the King of Rock and Roll would pass away suddenly less than a decade later.
With all of the continued hype around Elvis and the biopic about his life from last year still remaining popular, a new documentary about his Comeback Special is coming! The new doc called Reinventing Elvis: The ’68 Comeback appeared in movie theaters for one special day but will be coming to Paramount+ on August 15, 2023, the day before the anniversary of his death in 1977. It will feature stories from the original special’s director Steve Binder, interviews with fans who saw the concert live and Elvis experts, as well as new versions of his famous songs by stars such as Darius Rucker. Not only that, you get to see some scenes cut from the original special!

Binder shared about the documentary, “The world is filled with stories about Elvis and his historic 1968 Comeback Special, but no one has ever told this story the way only I can tell it—because I was there for every moment of it. I’m so proud of this film and am really excited that a legion of Elvis fans worldwide is going to have an opportunity to first experience it in theaters.”

The documentary aims to show the pressure Elvis faced as he tried to resurrect his career before it was too late and how he almost didn’t even make it to the concert stage. Luckily for Elvis, the concert went on and it was a huge hit featuring iconic songs such as “Hound Dog,” “All Shook Up,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and “Jailhouse Rock.” The film also aims to share what was going on for Elvis behind the scenes and a look at his manager Colonel Tom Parker, who often didn’t have Elvis’ best interests in mind.
