‘Three’s Company’ Actress Suzanne Somers Dies At 76
Famous for her roles in Three’s Company and Step by Step, Suzanne Somers has passed away at the age of 76 on the eve of her 77th birthday from breast cancer.
According to her longtime publicist R. Couri Hay she passed peacefully at home surrounded by family.
“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years.”
“Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly,” Hay said in a statement on behalf of Somers’ family.
Hay also stated that a private family burial will take place this week, and a memorial will be held in November.
Rejecting the idea of her as a “dumb blonde” in recent years, she instead tried to prove her mettle by releasing self-help books about the values of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and alternative cancer treatments. Somers was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, but declined chemotherapy. Later she released the book Knockout about alternative chemotherapy treatments. Her medical opinions, however, did land her in some hot water from the medical community. She appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2015, where she and professional dancer Tony Dovolani came in ninth place.
She was also a well-known spokesperson in the 1990s for the fad exercise equipment, Thighmaster.
Somers remains married to her husband Alan Hamel, a union that has lasted over 45 years. “The great thing I found about aging — and I love being in my 70s … the wisdom has begun to pour,” Somers had said in an interview.
Somers is survived by her husband Alan, son Bruce, stepchildren, Stephen and Leslie plus 6 grandchildren.
