Melissa Gilbert Believes Plastic Surgery Made Her Look Like ‘Spawn of Satan’

59-year-old Melissa Gilbert is best known as little Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie. After being in Hollywood, Gilbert says that she got caught up with getting plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures to look younger. Unfortunately, she looks back at some of the cosmetic procedures she’s done and isn’t very happy with the results.
She explained, “I literally looked like Carrot Top, the comedian. My hair was too red, and when I did Botox, I became the spawn of Satan with pointy eyebrows. I had no facial expression, which is anathema considering what I do for a living. It’s exhausting keeping up that kind of façade. I was very insecure.”

Around the same time, she met her now-husband, Timothy Busfield and he encouraged her to embrace her natural aging process. Gilbert said that he was very uplifting when she would talk about wanting to get her breast implants taken out or wanted to stop coloring her hair. She added, “It makes a big difference to come home to someone who sees me in sweats with no makeup on and my hair back in a ponytail and goes, ‘Oh, you are the most beautiful woman.’ As opposed to someone who goes, ‘I think you could lose a little weight.’ Or, ‘I’m getting nervous about these lines around your eyes.’ Which did happen in my past.”

Now, Gilbert and Busfield have been together for ten years and are continuing to embrace a slower pace of life. They live in a rustic cottage in the Catskill Mountains in New York and Gilbert likes to share the way she lives with her fans on social media, encouraging others to age and live more naturally. She created an app and website called Modern Prairie as a way to connect women who enjoy hobbies such as gardening and baking.

She concluded, “I wouldn’t want to be younger. I wouldn’t want to have to learn these lessons again. I like where I am. Happy in my skin, happy in my life.”
