Alice Cooper on Sobriety & Farewell Tours
Alice Cooper is 75 years old but he doesn’t feel like he is getting older. He recently opened up about his sobriety and how changing his lifestyle so many years ago has helped him to stay healthy and keep doing what he loves doing: rocking out on stage. He revealed, “Well, I stopped drinking 40 years ago, and I never smoked, so I’m probably still legally drunk.”
Cooper continued, “Well, you know, it’s really [that] you get addicted to being sober, that’s all. And most of the people that are around today that are still out touring from those days are sober. Very few bands [and] touring bands have anybody in the band that’s either an alcoholic or a druggie.”
Cooper added that just because many of his famous friends around his age are slowing down or heading out on farewell tours doesn’t mean he is stopping anytime soon. He will be touring across Europe next summer and doesn’t plan to stop until he has to. He shared, “A farewell tour hasn’t crossed my mind at all. And it’s weird, because all my friends are retiring.”
He looks to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger as his inspiration and says that whatever the 80-year-old rockstar can do, he can do too. Cooper just released his 22nd solo album this year and is excited to head back out on the road next year. He credits his sober lifestyle for helping him to keep high energy to do the shows and said that he’s “never been in better shape.”
He concluded, “It’s never been a thought that I’d retire. I feel great, and the band sounds great. I’m 75, but I’ll be up there at 90 if I’m still in good enough shape.”
