A New ‘Twister’ Is In the Works & Trailer Just Dropped!
If you live in an area where tornadoes are commonplace, you know just how terrifying they can be. In 1996, the film Twister aimed to showcase that fear. Starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, the movie had some amazing special effects for that time period and did extremely well in theaters and beyond. For fans of Twister, a new film is in the works called Twisters that promises to be a movie in its own right, not a sequel or reboot.
Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Maura Tierney star in the new film, and Powell shared a bit about it. He said, “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern day. I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.'” He added that filming recently wrapped after being delayed due to the strikes.
Powell continued, “When I was working on Top Gun, [Tom] Cruise brought up a really interesting thing, where he’s like, ‘If you want to make movies of a certain size and scope and scale, you have to figure out what can connect with everyone around the world in every territory.’ And humans-versus-weather is a very universal idea, how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces.”
Some of the cast came together at CinemaCon recently to talk about the film. Director Lee Isaac Chung shared, “We really tried to make this as immersive and real as possible. … We even sent stormchasers out to get footage for us. … This is meant to be a joyful, fun ride. I know there is lot of pessimism about the environment, but if we can bring audiences a sense of joy and awe about the natural world then maybe that can help.” Powell, Edgar-Jones and Ramos even did a “demonstration” of things they experienced on set, opening up about a “jet engine hitting us with ice.” Ouch!
Twisters is set to premiere on July 19, 2024 in theaters. The film is being distributed by Universal so it may be available to stream on Peacock sometime after its theatrical release. Let us know, are you interested in seeing Twisters?
